Whatever happened to Cory Matthews?

There were so many great shows on TV that entertained me through my youth, but sadly most, if not all, of these shows have either been cancelled or have come to a close. If I had the power to bring one of these shows back on the air, it would without a doubt be Boy Meets World.

This show was awesome! I didn’t know a single kid, preteen, or teenager who wasn’t enthralled by the life of Cory Matthews and his counterparts, Shawn and Topenga. I watched this show through most of my childhood and into my preteen years. Boy Meets World was a great show for families to watch together and most of the episodes contained morals which many kids could learn from.

I remember watching this show in the years following my parents’ divorce. It may sound silly, but watching the situations Shawn faced with his family made me appreciate the lack of severity within my own situation. There are not many shows on television anymore that showcase the struggles of teenagers and provide rationales for their problems.

Most popular television shows on air today are reality TV shows. Though everyone loves drama, there’s something a family-oriented sitcom can offer you that a reality show can’t. Boy Meets World was funny and had drama, but it also taught  lessons for young kids in similar situations. Reality TV usually ends an episode with screaming or a “To be continued..” statement, but sitcoms can go full-circle with a problem in just one episode.

I still love watching Boy Meets World, and luckily for me, it still comes on ABC Family in the mornings and on MTV2 during the afternoon. I wish new episodes could come back to air, but I’ll settle with reruns for now.

Welcome to the “Boro”

Most students in Statesboro would tell you there isn’t much to do in this town, but I beg to differ. First of all we live in the only Statesboro in the United States (You can’t say that about Athens… just saying!). Statesboro is also home to Zaxby’s. You’re welcome America!

In addition to these fun facts, Statesboro has so much to do that fails to be recognized. Statesboro has an awesome location being 45 minutes from Savannah, an hour from Tybee, 3 hours from Columbia, SC, and 3 and a half hours from Atlanta. We are so lucky to be within an hour of a fairly large city and better yet the beach.

If someone were to visit Statesboro for the first time I would recommend them first and foremost to see Georgia Southern’s campus. I personally think we have one of the prettiest campuses in the Southeast and people should see the place that brings in the most traffic to the city.

I would also recommend visitors to Statesboro to visit some of our unique eateries and shops located Downtown. You can walk around the square, check out some awesome restaurants like Lily’s Cafe, and visit specialty shops like Free Spirit Pottery.

I also recommend that any first timer to Statesboro and sushi lover has to eat at Tokyo’s. I’ve eaten sushi in a lot “nicer” of establishments, but for some reason this restaurant has the best. No one would ever think of Statesboro, Ga., to have any good sushi restaurants, but this place literally has the best sushi I’ve ever tasted.

Between the Georgia Southern campus, Downtown, and a visit to Tokyo’s first time visitors are sure to fall in love with this community nestled among a corn field. Over the past few years I have grown pretty fond of Statesboro, and I am actually a little sad to see my time here come to an end.

To Be A Freshman Again

I have truly enjoyed my time at Georgia Southern University, and I cannot believe that I only have a little over a year left here. Time has flown, and I remember freshman year like it was yesterday.

If I could change anything from my first year at Georgia Southern, I would definitely want to change my lack of involvement. I’m really involved on campus now as a member of several committees and a university employee. However, during my freshman year my involvement was nonexistent.

I also did not know anyone at Georgia Southern, and for the first time in my life I was forced to branch out and meet new people. I made friends eventually, but I could have utilized the relationships formed from campus involvement. I would have given myself plenty of opportunity to meet new people, rather then practically beg my classmates to have lunch with me (which is how I met my current roommate during our freshman year).

Being involved on campus has opened so many doors for me in my professional and personal relationships. My current jobs and summer internship are both results of my involvement on campus.  I know if I had begun making these connections sooner I would only have more opportunities for the future.

I strongly recommend any freshmen  preparing for college to get involved during their first year. Even if you find random volunteer opportunities – take them. I promise it will pay off in the long run.

10 Books to Read

Unfortunately, I have not read any of the books on PR Daily’s list. If any one remembers my post regarding book to movie adaptations, then you may remember that I do not read too often.

Although I am lacking on PR Daily’s reading list, I would love to read “Are You There Vodaka? It’s Me, Chelsea” by Chelsea Handler. I read a portion of this book in Barnes & Noble and I was cracking up for the few pages I read. I think this story would help me expand my creativity. Chelsea Handler thinks so out of the box and a little scandalously, and I think her sense of humor would be useful for anyone in a business position. She provides a more light-hearted approach to serious issues.

I also appreciate how most of her books are based on her actual life. I have always had more interest in books based on real events. Her creative outlook on her life could help me add humor to things that weigh me down or stress me out.

“The Hunger Games” also sounds interesting to me, but since it will be out as a movie soon I’ll probably just wait for the adaptation. I think the story behind the book could allow me to not only think creatively, but to also learn better problem-solving skills through the adventures of the main characters.

One book I think may be beneficial to pr professionals does not really fit with the list, but it focuses on creativity in pr. “Can We Do That?” by Peter Shankman is a story of real-life pr stunts completed by Shankman’s firm. His ideas are so out-of-the-box and any pr professional could benefit from realizing what they have the power to do to gain publicity in a competitive market.

Dream Job

As of now my dreams are a little unclear in regards to my career. I am just getting started in public relations, and I am still trying to figure out what excites me most. I have started to narrow down my areas of interest in public relations. I have gained more of an interest in hospitality and entertainment pr.

If I were to decide on a dream job as of now I think I would be director of communications for a major hotel chain, or do event planning for a hotel or resort. I think the hospitality field encompasses a lot of common pr practices I enjoy most. Hospitality pr requires effective crisis management, around-the-clock communication, and effective written and verbal communication for clients and publics.

I think I could shine among all others wanting my dream job through certain qualities I feel I possess and my prior work experience. I think I am an effective oral communicator, and I work well under pressure. I’m also a very scheduled and organized person, which would help me work with multiple deadlines and unexpected tasks.

In order to achieve my dream job I am trying to gain as much pr experience as I can while in college. I have broad experience ranging from funeral home pr to social media for a local pharmacy. I think broad experience would allow me to learn and apply certain skills to my dream job. I also think the broad experience helps me narrow down my interests in pr.
