Millennials and the Importance of Social Media

on April 11, 2012

My generation has been deemed as Millennials; we have grown up and been consumed  with technology. With the emergence of technology grew a world of social media. Recently in public relations, social media has become of greater importance when delivering the message of your clients to their associated publics. Many companies and firms have actually developed a social media department, which consists of people sitting at computers monitoring and responding to customer comments. Though this statement may go against traditional Millennial beliefs, I value social media for a business but only as a supplement to traditional media.

I will always believe that no communication can beat the value of face-to-face communication. Social media is great and can be really helpful for maintaining client relationships, but I think it is more effective if it is used as a supplement to traditional communication.

You may build strong relationships with certain clients. However, you may not be able to keep up with theses people on a daily basis. This is where social media may come to aid your business. You can post statuses or tweets to help your customers keep up with company happenings, get promotional deals, and ask questions directly to the company page. Businesses may in turn interact with specific customers to ask about the quality of their service and gain specific knowledge for customer needs.

A business may also utilize social media to gain company recognition, but once the recognition is gained a business can ensure repeat customers based on their face-to-face interaction. Social media will continue to grow with new technology, but no business owner should forget the value of traditional  interaction and customer service.

You made some great points about how face-to-face interaction is the best way to communicate and how social media is a great supplement to that. I think the way you eplained this would be the best way to show a person of another generation that social media would be helpful to their business. Like you said, it could get their name out, customers can keep up and they can get promotional deals.

I agree with you. I think that making a connection with someone face-to-face is important (especially with a client), but social media is a great way to see how someone acts and is viewed.

The foundations of relationships with customers definitely don’t come from social media, you have that right. I think it’s just good for updates and feedback, and let the real human interactions do what they do best!
